Expanding Our Wheelhouse

All through life we’re faced with the challenge of doing things outside our comfort zone. And sometimes there’s an assumption that ‘comfort zone life’ in our later years is more acceptable.

Please don’t think we assume YES! is always the right answer when we’re asked to consider something outside our wheelhouse.

I had some crazy adventures in my younger years that would seem irresponsible and irrational now in my seventies. For sure, no more hopping freight trains and hitchhiking from state to state!

On the other hand, it’s our too-quick, automatic ‘no’ responses that make us wonder, “Are we really listening to God’s voice, seeking His wisdom, and asking for His courage?”

We’re in the process of asking younger and older adults to consider initiating one-on-one or two-on-two discipleship friendships with someone at the other end of the age spectrum.

Some will for good reasons have to say ‘no’ to this opportunity, but we’re hoping and praying for many to step forward and say ‘yes’ to this eight-week commitment.

And we’re praying that YES! responses coming from both young and older adults will lead to some powerful testimonies---and a ripple effect that helps YES! introduce similar efforts in other churches.

As we grow older, may we still be open to God-ordained opportunities to boldly step outside our comfort zones---or allow Him to expand the boundaries of our wheelhouse.

Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.” Isaiah 54:2 (NIV):
