Milestones
When people cross significant thresholds, personal identity questions can take center stage. So much of who we are gets wrapped up with life roles we’ve been privileged to play.
Particularly when roles end abruptly, people go through a dense fog patch, wondering who they’ve become with that identity piece now missing.
Of course, our core identity should not be so heavily tied to these roles…we are much more than the sum of these parts.
Looking at this from another angle, though, it’s good to not just push these significant roles aside and immediately grasp for new identities to fill the void. When we view changes only from a loss standpoint, we may miss savoring both the past wins and the continuum ahead.
Life has a lot of significant milestones, but our identity:
· As seekers does not end with salvation,
· As children does not end with adulthood,
· As learners does not end with graduation,
· As parents does not end with the empty nest,
· As workers does not end with retirement,
· As people of hope does not end with death.
We’ve passed on the YES! executive director title this past month, and we’re so grateful to have a continuing role with YES! going forward as cofounders.
And while our life purpose and passion are broader than YES!, we’re thrilled to now serve in a supportive role, helping Dan & Shani Parotti as they assume primary leadership.
